Rachel and Anneliese had some an intimate family wedding at Grayslake’s famous Byron Colby Barn last month. The two girls met in college and were so in love with each other. It was quite possibly one of the worst Spring weather days in Chicago and it rained the whole time, but Rachel and Anneliese were all smiles all day long. They did not let the rain bother then and even stepped out on several occasions to grab some bridal portraits outside the farm.
Matching custom made Converse shoes in green and orange, pokemon table number cards, adorable matching bow ties, simple suits with vests, and Famous Dave’s catering really spoke to their casual and calm nature – in life and in their marriage!
One of my absolute favorites from the day! – hello, dramatic lighting 🙂
Their casual wedding ceremony was intimate and so meaningful. They both love tea and have a ritual of spending their evenings drinking tea together and catching up with on their day. So they brought this ritual into the wedding ceremony by shared their favorite teas with each other’s family.
Their vows were written on post-it notes and they ever shared thoughts that they had written to their future selves from when they first met!
Perhaps one of my favorite moments was when Rachel and Anneliese played a game during the reception. They both answered questions about each other and about their relationship without looking at each other. And I have to say, their answers were spot on every time! – I was very impressed with how in tune they were with each other! A match that was meant to be.
I would be doing this lovely couple a disservice if I did not share a personal story here. I remember Anneliese’s mom Linda asking me if I was okay photographing a same sex wedding when she first approached me to inquire about my wedding photography services. I was quite surprised to hear this. My philosophy has always been one of acceptance and inclusion. Finding true love is hard enough as it is, why should it matter who they are and what their religion/orientation is? I have had the incredible good fortune of photographing some incredible cross-cultural weddings and I have to say they are some of my favorite! I always walk away knowing two loving families have gotten together as one.
Rachel and Anneliese, I wish you nothing but the very best for the future and I know you two are right where you belong – with each other! Thank you for having me photograph your wedding day celebrations.
And a huge thank you to my lovely friend Shanna Aitken for second shooting with me!
